THE PROGRAM POLICY

The Stewart F. Alexander Summer Internship Program Policy

Scope:

This policy applies to HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley (HUMCPV) and all of its wholly- owned, or wholly controlled, affiliates.  Administrative policies apply to all departments unless the Policy Owner specifies otherwise.

Purpose:

To assure that all students who visit HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley are accounted for and have undergone a baseline screening by the Medical Staff Services Department. All students need to undergo the procedures outlined by this policy in order to spend any time at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.

 Policy:

Eligibility:

Students who are currently enrolled in college and are eligible to participate in the program under the supervision of a HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley Medical Staff physician, who is a designated program mentor and has active status and is in good standing. The requesting student must provide proof of active enrollment by their current school.

Screening:

All students interested in participating in The Stewart F. Alexander Summer Internship Program at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley must complete the “Program Application.” The form must be signed by the student and parent/ guardian of the student if under the age of 18. The form must then be submitted to the Medical Staff Services Department. The application will then be reviewed by The Stewart F. Alexander Program Committee to determine if the student is eligible for acceptance to the program.

Once a student is accepted to the program they will receive an acceptance letter and the necessary forms and paperwork to begin the program. The following information will be required:

  • Copy of Driver’s License or Photo Identification
  • Proof of Current PPD
  • Proof of Immunization
  • Proof of School Affiliation/ Enrollment
  • Understanding of Health Care Confidentiality/ HIPAA
  • Background Check Release Forms
  • Release of Liability over/under 18
  • Dress Code Form

Timing and Attendance:

Interns will rotate part time for 6 weeks (25 hours per week). Each intern will be matched with program mentors within their selected specialties. Students who are absent for more than 15 hours of the program will not be able to graduate from the program or receive the program scholarship.

Responsibilities of the Student:

A student enrolled in the program may not scrub in surgical cases, write on charts or actively participate in patient care.

All students are required to attend orientation and will agree to abide by all rules/ policies and procedures explained to them in orientation.

Responsibilities of Program Mentors:

The program mentor/ attending physician whom the student will be shadowing assumes full responsibility and liability for the student while here at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.

Behavior:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times while at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley. Hospital-issued ID badges are required to be worn at all times. Visiting students are required to follow the HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley Dress Code Policy. Behavior problems or problems with students attempting to function outside the scope of practice, are to be reported promptly to the Medical Staff Services Department.
